The fact is, a legitimate leather couch will run you in the neighborhood of $7000 and up. My wife and I spent a good amount of time figuring out how seating purchased 30-40 years ago differed from today; why my parent's shit just lasted - even with us beating the hell out of it as kids. The TL:DR is that Ikea fucked us all. They lowered the bar, year after year after year and the Clinton's WTO and NATO treaties ensured that the import market drove quality down to match, initially offering rock bottom pricing - but over time, inflating to match market expectations.

Fuck foam, fuck fabric straps - they rot and tear with 100% certainty. Fuck PU or manufactured leather, it breeds bacteria and it excretes residual chemicals over time that your skin absorbs. In fact, fuck 'full grain' leather that's only a mm or two thick, made from some tortured and sick Indian cow, or worse, one slaughtered in East Asia. Real couches, like were literally everywhere in the 80's and early 90's were wood. They had natural fill cushions. The had eight way tied spring suspensions. They aren't hyper-luxury surfaces either - they're REAL seating surfaces that if purchased, will last decades.

Everything and anything that falls short of this most basic mark is disposable shit. I promise you that if you can save your way into this furniture, you will know how the frame was constructed and of what. You will know how thick the leather is, and how to care for it to last indefinitely. You will not need to ask the internet, because the manufacturer himself will take your pet requirements into account when discussing your order.

I don't know why, but there are a shit ton of manufacturers in North Carolina and they ship nationally. I'm not vouching for this brand, but they are one such example... And fuck places like Restoration Hardware; they talk big but they're essentially Ikea++.
