There is different types of leather. Some is supple and soft while others is tough and hard. Their claws are pretty tough. A dog that size will likely damage all leather but it will destroy the soft/supple kind. If you're buying leather on the other end of the spectrum, it's more like laying on plastic than anything else. As such, I don't see the point.
Of course, an option is to keep your animals off the furniture or to only sit on you or a blanket. We've trained dogs and cats to do this. But 60lbs is a huge lap dog. I'd recommend keeping the animals off the furniture and counters. If for no other reason, no one wants to smell them or get their hair all over them simply by being your guest.

Yep. Especially if the guests are allergic, getting the dog's hair on them could hurt them. I've heard too many times from people I was friends with, "The dog is allowed on the furniture, he's family. You're a guest, not family. If you don't like him you can leave." They don't bother to clean the furniture up enough to be tolerable, on top of expecting me to sit next to them. Please note the wording "people I WAS friends with," no one wants to hang out with someone who treats animals better than humans. I'm not gonna suffer with an allergy rash cuz my health is worth less to my friend than the comfort of their dog. If someone has a dog I'm allergic to and they let it on all their furniture I simply can't go to their house. It's rude to expect guests to sit in dog hair/stink whether they're allergic or not. And OP, if your dog happens to stink you'll become nose blind to it but your couch will reek. I noticed how bad of a problem this is after I moved out, away from my parents' dogs. The smell will get on your clothes, on your guests' clothes. If you vacuum the hair off the smell will still be there. IMO you should just keep them off the couch. Or get a couch cover like that guy said. Maybe get a second smaller couch if there's room, but don't allow them on your main couch.
You have the responsibility to being informed about dangers before going into someone's home, not the other way around. If you need a hyperbolic station to exist in, 1st slap your parents for not exposing you to enough dirt/slime/grime as a kid. 2nd learn how to host, because that's the only acceptable scenario to being in a group for people with "allergies that can kill them".

What are you talking about? I went outside as a kid plenty. I had horses, cats, dogs. I’m still allergic to some types of dogs and cats. It’s not a deadly allergy but if someone doesn’t clean their furniture good enough, which most don’t (they think their couches are dog beds and don’t enforce boundaries with their animals). I’ll end up with a rash. It’s nice you assume I’m so weak I’d die from animal fur and it’s my parents’ fault lol. Since we’re making assumptions, I will assume your house smells like dog butt with the way you responded to my comment.
