We have the technology to far more than stop the degradation. Genetic testing can do amazing things. Far more than selective breeding using cheap heuristics.

We don't have the technology yet to safely and reliably alter DNA. At best we can make an attempt on a zygote and then test the results. But if you don't know what you are looking for, ie damage to other parts of the DNA, it is hard to catch. Gene sequencing only looks at a tiny fraction of the genome at specific genes. If damage is done outside of that it won't get caught.

Don't worry. Might take a bit but with things like CRISPER put there we'll reach it. One day people will consider it cruel and unusual to NOT genetically modify your child to remove illnesses and give them stronger attributes.

But yes, today's progress sucks.
