I don't think you realize how much your entire lens for viewing history is through Christianity. The assessment you have of gods and kings is deeply influenced by the Christians. Pre-Christian History isn't all pleasant either. The pagans sewers in many regions had the bones of their little girl babies. Unwanted, they were killed. Christian ethics happening person-to-person changed this. The brutality of the European tribes was also greatly restrained over time, by a change in the hearts of their people.
