If the blocks are moving, look up. Learn the fluid path. How mud gets from the pits to the bit and back to the pits. Walk those lines and learn about the mud and the pumps. Don't put your hand anywhere you wouldn't put your dick. Don't look for the key to the v door. There isn't one. Be aware and alert. Shit happens quick and everything can kill you. Empty your pockets before working around the floor. Count pipe. Know how much pipe is on location so you will always be able to count it and found figure out where your at in the hole. Get a tally book. Write shit down. Ask someone how to fill out a kill sheet. Make a hand not a face.

Here’s Mike Rowe, the host of Dirty Jobs, on a drill rig. I can think of worse jobs, but not many. https://youtu.be/fVsCfElvg6U

Like working with any rotational machinery, do not wear any loose clothing or jewelry.

Congrats. When you start keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut. Guys in the oil business are generally good people and will go out of their way to show you the ropes. Be respectful and show up on time and you should be ok.

1-Listen. 2-Be alert, stay alert, your first week you should be an absolute sponge on the nuances as well as the instructions. 3-Drink loads of water (get 12 oz before you start your day) as well as Tylenol/ibuprofen in the a.m. 4-Punctuality (get to work early, do your job on time, get in a rhythm) 5-Zero whining. You haven't earned the right to complain. So don't.

I asked an insider for any tips (an oil and gas exploratory geologist) and, he said, “ I think there is a hierarchy (driller, tool pusher, roughneck) just like in the manor at Downton Abbey.” (Which I thought was funny).

No jewelry , especially rings. Do not piss off the Driller. Keep the rig floor unobstructed.
