I had a pen pal in the 70’s, when I was in the 6th grade. I was forced into it by my school, I was assigned a Japanese girl. In her second letter she said her grandfather was smoked on Peleliu, and I wrote back that my grandfather was on Peleliu too, but he made it. He wasn’t a marine actually on Peleliu, but he was on a navy ship nearby that was shelling the shit out of that island; close enough. Small world…. She never wrote me back.
