We may have the opportunity to move to a new state in 2022. Looking at real estate in the area where we would move, nothing has us excited - and we're sick of living in suburbs - so we're considering buying land and building. We wouldn't be able to afford a true homestead, but could get at least 1-2 acres.

Has anyone here bought a plot and built a house before? Any pitfalls to look out for? Would you build again or buy in the future?

I’m renovating and I can tell you this. You are going to lose a whole year of your life being a part of it, even if you are just choosing things and following up with it (getting the exact details is actually the long part).

Do you care that much about real estate? To make it a section of your life? Just your abode you’ve never thought much of up until now other than how long it takes to pack your stuff up and move to a place.

Also you’re not likely to meet your expectations unless you are making an exact replica of something you already like, which is exactly what I recommend you do.

One thing I can say about actually getting involved in the construction and a real renovation, have a lot of respect for the price people charge, property that is already done and the cost they are asking for.
