I'd like to buy about $1,000 worth of precious medals that I can lock in a safe or bury in the backyard.

I'm no expert and have only a few ounces of silver but I only purchase uncirculated silver eagles. I have a couple ounce bars as well. Always keep an eye on the spot price that way you'll know whether you're being ripped off or not. As far as where to purchase, if you have a local shop maybe try that or a reliable online store that won't charge all sorts of fees and shipping charges. Beware of people selling large bars because they can be hollowed out and filled with lead.

Best to stick with coins of 1 oz or smaller. Bars are too easily counterfeited, and hard to test without expensive equipment. Lots of bars come in plastic packaging to suggest that it's authentic, but this makes it even easier to counterfeit.
