I just purchased a second Berkey water filter system. I purchased a travel Berkey as I already have a royal Berkey.

My family thinks it was a waste of money, then again they think my little stockpile is. I believe I will have food and water when it becomes unavailable to the general public.

What about you guys?

I've had to stop telling people because the people I've told already think I'm nuts. So far, I've bought a 6Kw inverter, 10Kwh of LiFePo4 batteries, 12 solar panels, a MPPT charge controller, portable generator, 50 gallons of fuel storage, wood stove, 5 cords of wood, 100 lbs of rice and beans and a lot more food items. Did I mention my two high velocity lead projectile devices?

[–] 1 pt

lead projectile devices. yes I'm using that from now on.

I like "handheld noise makers" myself

It might be a stupid question, but I ask because it's a hole in my survival skills. What type (and form) of beans is it that you stock up on? How will they typically be prepared and eaten? This is something I don't really know about but would like to.

(Guessing it's not "cans of baked beans" haha)

I buy bags of beans like pinto, black, kidney, lentils. Essentially, a variety of bagged beans. There are many kinds to choose from. Look in your area for stores specializing in selling to restaurants. Don't buy emergency foods from Amazon or prepper online stores. I found them over 2 or 4 times higher. Sometimes ethnic stores like Indian, Korean or Asian stores are good.

Make sure you freeze them for 24-48 hours before you put them up to kill any pests they are carrying. Triply so for rice, rice moths will infest your whole stockpile in a month or two.

Thanks that is great info, I'll start with learning to cook with them then look into bulk.

How do you prep your beans and such for storage?

[–] 1 pt

I spent about 5k on camera equipment.

I bought lottery tickets. Nobody's business what anyone else has.

[–] 1 pt

Can't win if you don't play. True its no one's business but it's not like many of us know each other in real life. Plus it might help some of our fellow poalers for stuff they may not know exist or need a reminder to pick up.

I do understand. But. I would rather recommend in general what folks should be getting. Instead of the exact item in question. This way we don't have a shortage of the exact things folks are trying to buy. If you have not purchased a water filtration device, freeze dried food, portable self powered stove/heater, light sources, and etc.

I planted an small orchard this summer.

Nice! Which varieties made it in?

So far 5 likely won't make it out of 13 due to my inexperience. Mulling to replant now or wait. I have apples and cherries. Also have a nearby blueberry patch. The cherries are not doing well, some got eaten/destroyed by a deer. So we have fence work to do. Soil needs amending. Only have about 4 weeks left I could comfortably work out there.

I bought another electric guitar, because I already have around 20

Just picked up a half-sized acoustic. I like having it around the living room to mess around on when I'm in the mood without having to break out the big boys.

I bought a little A-style mandolin for exactly this. It's a ton of fun for playing Irish/Folk music as fast as you possibly can, and it can be learned in an afternoon if you're already a guitar player. You can find them used for around $60.

When the shit hits the fan, they'll all be terrible acoustic guitars.

Uh...solar panels, anyone? Plus, I like looking at them. They will be of great comfort when Tyrone and the bois crash thru my door, looking for gibs and White wimmens.

Cool I wish I had the talent to play guitar well. I play like "someone with a wooden hand that was chopped off. twice." thanks mom.

[–] 0 pt

How is that your mom's fault? You aren't capable of learning and practicing new things on your own as an adult?

[–] 0 pt

No its not her fault. The criticism of my playing was something she said.

[–] 0 pt

No one can fuck you up like your parents. I had zero support as well, it only made me play more.

I bought some 5.11 Rush72 bags for the family. We packed them as go bags.

Dwelling Portably. My first copy got ripped off ten years ago.

Yes, you will have to look beyond the fact it is Whole Earth Catalog hippy oriented.

[–] 1 pt

eh the hippy generation who were actually hippie's were probably annoying but generally non violent, live and let live kinda people. The new world hippie's aka socialists in training. We must break them. I will check out the book, it looks like it might have a few good ideas

There was always that element of extremism. I was invited to join the SDS when I was 17 in the early 70s. I declined stating "Aren't they communists?"

That looks like an interesting book, and I see they have a set of three, spanning 40 years of updates. I may spend next week's discretionary dollars on a set.

Some of the camping guides from the 1950s and 60s can be really informative and useful to have around as well. They generally tend to be "a knife and a big can will get you through this" guides.

Been looking at body armor

In my experience buy the best and avoid regret

Shell Tactical has some good products and actually had stock when I checked. Their sales staff actually answer the phone too.

An inflatable pillow.

A fold up portable solar panel and I currently have hanging in my window. I can un-fold it and leave it in the dashboard of my vehicle during the day to charge my devices or battery packs.

Seriously go buy a few packs of batteries from Costco along with flashlights.

I don't have any preps. I collect cardboard.

But if I did I would make sure I had maybe 3 months of food, water and first aid and enough boomsticks to keep it safe. After that I would worry about necessary medications and hygiene items like tp, soap, toothpaste, etc. Then I would focus on grid comforts like solar power. Then if I had the land I would start a true homestead so I never had to worry about food again.

Above all I would get my friends to do the same and live close to me.

But idk, all I do is collect cardboard.
