Well they didnt give raises last year bc of covid. Fine whatever. Found out a guy at my work started at the beginning of the pandemic started out 5k more than me and got a full 3% raise. Me? 2.5% and still make way less. I have more experience than this guy and i was only in the position a year prior. I do way more and also put in way more hours. We have the same degree from the same school, same job title and around the same age. Same schooling with more experience and involved in way more making less than this guy. Im livid. Before i found out hownuch he made i asked for 10% and was told thats not possible but if i got what i asked for, id still be making 950 less than this guy after his 3% raise. Ive had no complaints and rarely any mistakes. I got shafted royally. Any suggestions?

Find another employer, get the job and start day. Leave that job the day before. Drop notice in the morning, have your things packed. What? No notice? Did they treat you fairly? No. Why give them the courtesy thay won't extend to you?

You don't have to leave on short notice, that is just useless spite. As soon as you get the new job give them notice that you are leaving. Your new employer will allow you at least two weeks to quit your old job.

Like others have said, shop around, find an employer who will pay you more, then tell your current employer if they don't beat that offer.... you're gone. They likely will if you're a good employee.

An employer is purchasing your time. If you want and deserve more, then someone else will pay it. Fuck loyalty at the point when someone is consciously fucking you like that.

I STRONGLY reccomend not bringing a counter offer to your current employer. If you get a better paying opportunity just put your notice in and reject all offers from them.The'll just keep you until they hire your new and cheaper replacement then fire you for being late once 3 years ago on cinco de mayo.

If you are really 'irreplacable' and like your current work you could also let your boss know you will be available for consulting work for a lot more money than you originally wanted.

This way you have a better stable new job, get to make a nice side hustle where you make your own hours and rules; and also get to take more money out of that cocksuckers wallet for refusing a common sense raise because he thought you were a chump.

If they're desperate enough to accept you as a consultant i promise you there is no better feeling than walking back to your old job making twice your old rate knowing your old boss is seething every week he does payroll.

That's not good advice from my experience. It's normal practice in most professions to bring counter job offers to your current employer. A lot of times it's the only way to make any real progress in your career. Often it's easier for your employer to pay you an extra $5K instead of finding a replacement, assuming you are doing your job well. Especially in the environment. Don't ever lie about another offer because you'll be screwed if they call your bluff.

You probably don't even need to do that. Just imply you have a better offer. Just say you've looked around and you feel underpaid or some shit. It should be enough to put fear into your manager that he may lose you.

There's a labor shortage right now thougbit depends on the sector. That might give you negotiating leverage. If they had to hire him at 5k more than you, then your replacement will likely cost as much, and will take some time to train.

Not in my experience. If you are bringing someone on at a superior wage and have not already exhausted options for having existing staff training a subordinate at a much lower wage then that indicates whoever is currently in the position is on the way out.

You don't advance your career by staying with the same company. The longer you stick with a company, the more they know they can take advantage of you. Put in your 2 years, increase your skillset and resume, find another better paying job. Rinse, repeat.

Find another job that pays better. If you can't, then upgrade your current skills or acquire new ones using online/offline resources. Expanding your knowledge and skillset is more important than diplomas and degrees.

The great thing about tech/engineering interviews is that they will know within 3-4 minutes whether or not you have the technical knowledge and understanding of design principles. Being a good engineer is about being a good designer. Enhance your skills with AutoCAD and it wouldn't hurt to get online certificates in other relevant software suites. These online certificates are cheap and easy and a nice way to jack up the resume. It also shows potential employers that you are willing to learn, and that is probably what they are most looking for in an EIT.

Also, the HR reps care more about degrees/certificates as opposed to the hiring managers who usually care about your demonstrated technical knowledge and also if you seem easy to work with.

I worked for an employer who had a hard % cap on pay increases which made it extremely hard for them to retain people that they promoted from within. I don't recall what that % was, but it wasn't that much maybe 10%? What would happen is people would work for them for x number of years, get a new position with a new title that should increase their pay by say 30-40% at a minimum, however due to their pay increase cap it would have to basically get C level approval and even then they'd only increase the pay by ~25% at the maximum. People would then update their resume and start looking for a new job with their fancy new title and take a job elsewhere. Some would wait a year or two and come back at the correct pay scale. This problem wasn't the case with the entire company, but in my situation I had accumulated a wealth of institutional knowledge and was in a situation where I should have been making ~40% more than I was getting paid so I left knowing I could always go back if things didn't work out. The last time I drove by their offices they were flying a faggot flag so the chances of me being willing to work for them again are pretty slim.

OP, apologies for hijacking the topic. But I'd like to point out situations like this are very common in the career/professional work environments where even men aren't paid the same amount for the same work. So when women complain about the wage gap its utterly laughable.

And OP, your boss is faggot. But its all too common.
