In a situation like that, communities would have to pull together (not likely) to survive. I'd be willing to do my part, if I had some insurance that my family and property were secure. I'd have to leave that to my father, and I really don't think he would be able to defend it alone.
I would definitely wait things out for a few weeks at least.
Smart man. Hunker down until people start moving about and can start to trust a little more. Otherwise you’d be seen as a possible looter or opportunist.
I can’t recall what those people back in the pioneer days or even in Europe along well traveled roads/journeys were called. They’d be along the trial/road and ask if they could join along. They were treated with suspicion in the beginning but over weeks/months they became apart of the group by proving themselves to be loyal.
Then one night they’d kill everyone and take the money/prized possessions and probably some women/girls.
Trust nobody, even after time, if you have something they don’t or they see you as direct competition they may do the same thing to you eventually. That’s why family is key.
