So there's a drunken 50 something year old Karen in my condo apt building, she's pretty widely known for craziness in this building in the 3 yrs she moved here, but I'm curious how you guys would deal with someone like this. For reference she puts away like 4 cases of beer and a bunch of wine and other alcohols a week. I see it in the disposal room whenever she's home for the week

There's atleast 5 reviews of the building that mention avoiding buying or renting anywhere near her. Unfortunately she moved in after I already bought my apartment, so I'm kind of stuck with her as my next door neighbor and the nice neighbors are now thinking of leaving :|

Background: I live in a condo with a multi-level parking garage with a locked door to the floor lobby for access to the elevators.

So today after I had just loaded groceries from my car into a crate in the parking lot and started walking to the building to catch the elevator, Karen swings by at high speed nearly clipping me, and proceeds to try and get her car into her parking slot 4 or 5 slots away and sees me carrying the crate in. Since I had my hands full I unlocked the door, go inside and call the elevator and wait for it to show.

About 40 seconds later just as the elevator arrives, Karen comes in reeking of alcohol and mad as hell that I didn't hold the door open for a "lady" which I guess involves waiting for her to park, get out of the car, grab her stuff and make her way to the door while I hold the door and wait? And of course she continues all the way up the elevator and yelling about how I'm not a gentleman, and that's why she doesn't like me, it's not a race thing etc although it is lol. At this point she's just running out of things to say and mostly trying not to say things.

I said nothing to avoid agitating her further, because I don't think getting into a fight with a drunken nut is worth my time, but..

What do you do about crazy neighbors?

Be polite, be cordial, and most importantly be condescending. Always smile, agree with her nonsense, agree in a way that she knows you’re looking down at her. I.e. at the elevator agree you’re not a gentleman and she should not like you. Then smile. Wave and tell her to have a nice day. Do this every time. Do not argue with her, nor apologize just go along with whatever nonsense she is spouting like you agree with her. It will be hilarious, and confuse the hell out of her.

Just start giving them tons of high proof liquor and the problem will sort itself out.

Bottom line, you move. You can try ignoring them; you can try intimidating them; you can try fucking with them; you can try reporting them to the police; you can even try reasoning with them, although in my experience this never works -- the only sure and permanent solution is to move.
