It's mostly environmental - whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger - but at the same time that strength is extremely heavy & carrying it WILL make you buckle - meaning you'll have breakdowns - and if you can survive those then you'll be stronger - yet you'll still need to carry the weight of what made you depressed and/or break in the first place.
