Finishing just one side is the only way to retain aroma qualities.

This is the correct answer. You don’t put any finish on the inside of the box or chest. Just the outside.

im finishing a cedar chest for my kids, only going to poly the outside the inside will remain unfinished

Use cedar oil or Danish oil, nigga

You can stain it a light color to make it uniform. Don’t clearcoat or seal it.

You don't finish them really, they are naturally fairly weather resistant. You can use Linseed oil but you're going to lose scent.

I've also had success with beeswax, but I use it for other hard words as cedar is it's own animal.

Depending on what you are building. Such as a cedar chest for linens or shelving in a closet.

For chests and other furniture such as that. Finish on the outside with fine sanding and then use a beeswax or something of the like.

Leave it be on the inside. Cedar is a natural insect repellent so naturally I wouldn't seal it or finish it. If you have any other questions feel free to reply.

Have you ever worked with other aromatics like sassafras or eucalyptus? I’ve been thinking about building a cabin with a number of rooms each with a different aromatic experience: red cedar room, sassafras room, amber room, eucalyptus room, etc. I’d like to do tongue and groove planks on the walls of each room. I just don’t know if the walls would need extra protection.

Building a cabin with sassafras or eucalyptus? Not sure if that is even feasible.

Cedar trees are abundant and common for cabin building. I am not familiar with a sassafras cabin.

I only want to use the exotics on interior walls. There’s plenty of specialty mills that have them.

This is Poal, the only wood we all have experience working with would be... do I really need to finish this?

Go sniff your own jizz. We’re looking for craftsmanship here.

Your mother is my jizz receptacle and you should be grateful I get close enough to her for that!

Good question! I don't think you can. Oil would seal off the smell. You could use salt water as a preservative/seal but it would bleach it the wood.
