You get used to the beatings etc, so nothing there stands out.

The one thing that I still remember vividly though was getting my mouth washed out with a bar of soap. I still won't cuss in front of my mother to this day.

Lye soap. My parents used lye soap.

Sounds nasty but I really can't imagine it tasting worse than commercial soap. Ughh on both counts!
