Many plants produce machine quality oils. Bem oil, from the moringa tree, used to be one of them. If you can get plants to grow, you are golden.

Well petrol dollar just means they need to buy their oil in dollars, it actually works better if they don't have their own oil. That makes them totally dependent on Petro dollars.

The real question is how air tight are the doors.to the super tanker because that is going to be really important.

EROEI. Energy return on energy invested. Net energy. How many barrels of oil do you burn in the abstraction and refinement process. How many solar panels do you need running just to make more solar panels. Oil used to be 100:1 now it's like 20:1. Solar is like 12:1. You can't run industrial society on 12:1 Solar panels are only cheap now because oil is cheap. Imagine trying to run the mining equipment for panels on solar. Mars colony is never going to happen.

The US lost its manufacturing economy forever right when US oil quality (EROEI) peaked in the 70s. The US went off the gold standard at the same time.

Nuclear and solar for energy. Carbon and silicon for lubricants.

Going back to 1st principles, as they say, hydrocarbons are the basis for an economy centered in organic chemistry. Without hydrocarbon, Mars economy will be forced to center around inorganic chemistry.

In fact and based on first principles, because hydrocarbons would be true scarcity on Mars, the intrinsic value of hydrocarbon related products off world would be much higher than their value here. Hydrocarbon value on Earth is based on artificial scarcity, primarily controlled through OPEC cartel rationing.

The economics of inorganic based global economies is reason to doubt the viability of long term offworld persistence for organic based life forms.
