I don't care whether the black children were boys or girls, what I was questioning was the race/gender of the psychologist asking the question.
Take a look at 2:25 for instance. It's a full grown caucasian male grilling a black child on which skin tone he likes best. In that instance, how do you think the child is going to react?
He acts meekly, unsure, because he instinctually knows the difference between him and the researcher, he knows that the researcher knows the difference, but he's confused as shit as to why the fully-grown man is asking him, a child, to confirm this information. It is confusing. It goes against what his instincts as a young boy tell him how the world should work.
So, he answers in the most neutral, milque-toast, LOW-RISK way imaginable: "He's...white....and....I don't know".
Because the kid doesn't yet have the mental ability to realize that this is just a test, this researcher has no personal beef with him, he's not in any danger, etc. Because he is a child.
What skin color do you think the young, defenseless child is going to pick in this scenario? As any child from a broken home will be able to attest, truth is relative to whoever has the biggest frame and meatiest paws. Even children who don't come from broken or abusive homes will feel this same pressure, as the laws of power dynamics are literally written into our DNA. Appease big things so don't die. Kill small things so eat so don't die.
How do we know the children being questioned aren't just trying to display "in-group" preference towards the "in-group" they've temporarily found themselves in, the majority caucasian researchers, because their instincts are currently screaming at them: "DANGER, NOT-LIKE TRIBE OF HUMANS CONTROL AREA, APPEASE TO SURVIVE"?
Which, again, makes me wonder how the test might differ if the race of the psychologists themselves differed.
I wouldn't be surprised if, say for example, you took some suburban 7 year olds, took them on a car ride to a psychology research hospital in Chicago or Detroit, and had the all-black team of psychologists ask them which doll they prefer. Would the white kids still choose their actual in-group? Or would they do their best to appease the full-grown strangers their parents have left them with?
