Today, on a conference call, someone said, "it's always darkest before the dawn."

I couldn't help myself. I said, "No it isn't. It's darkest in the middle of the night, equidistant between sunset and sunrise." That got quite a few laughs.

'We're all in this together' - no, we are not. 'It takes a village to raise a child' - only in the absence of involved and loving parents (birth or adoptive). The village cares about what's best for the village, not for the individual.

'Time and time again' is overused and gets on my nerves. I don't hate it, but people who use it in arguments lose a teensy weensy bit of poalcat respect ... time and time again

It takes a village to raise a child

This one is to goad the relatives into babysitting for free. I can respect the practical usefulness of this saying.
