Keep a todo list and don't be afraid to add a few things you actually enjoy doing on it. People turn to things that they know aren't good for them when they are looking to waste some time. Well if you always have something better to do then drink or hang out with a friends that's going to get you to drink then you won't do that. You have to balance it though because stress can be the other reason people drink so if being more productive is stressing you out it won't help.
The point is people put all their goals in the back of their head and forget about them. You have to be presented with an either or option and that doesn't work if you forget what the other options were.
