Someone made Poal as a Voat backup. Predicting that one day Voat would die.
Then all the users who didn't fit in at Voat moved here, kept the site going, worked out all the bugs.
Then Voat was killed and everyone flooded in.

I was just speaking generally. If you're asking what their niche was that made it different from Voat - I don't know what that was, or if there was a specific niche here. From what little time I spent here off and on, going by just content, it was (to me) very similar to Voat.
It was a smaller tighter knit community. Not as harsh, angry, or negative. Which shows in their distaste for downvotes.
Actually, that was it. Poal wasn't as scary, and mean as Voat.
