Yes, it was. The flap system was intriguing. The flaps were hydraulically operated in a high-speed turn; they would automatically extend to allow a tighter turn.

Yes. The "butterfly flaps" were used on a number of Jap monoplanes, effectively. As the war went on, the Zero became more and more obsolete, and the new planes incorporated what were standard features, on US planes. The N1K1/Rex was a solid fighter for the IJN, and the N1K2 had better performance; shitty gas crippled it.
