Academia was defiant when LIDAR showed how there are stone buildings buried by jungle all over central America. They grasp their establishment as their lifeblood. I spoke with a researcher working at El Mirador in Guatemala who presented to a symposium of archaeologists and he claims 2/3 of the room got up and walked out when he told them how much of central America was once occupied by stone buildings, clearly shown by LIDAR. The scientists didn't want to trust the science of LIDAR, just the science of who/what pays out the grant money.
