They are often beautiful fish but they're mean fucks; back in the day I ran a pet store and the coons loved ugly ass Oscars and piranha- not much difference between the two because both species eat everything in sight.
Those are south american. African are schoolers. Not sure exactly why both are classified as chichlids, but south americans have about as much in common with a african variety as a red tail hawk as in common with a budgie
I don't know about chichlids, just African cichlids and while they fought constantly and ate other fish. My favorite cichlid was the Nigerian mouthbrooder (or something like that); I used to like seeing them pull their fry into their mouths.

They're cichlids because that's a family of fish species. Tree of Life type stuff. All cichlids have aggression issues, except discus... They're pussies.
God...Discuss....have such a love hate with them. I will say this though: For all the stuff written that they're delicate and finicky, I've seen Discuss live and thrive in toilet water tanks. Just a shame they're not good tank makes with basically anything else.
