Real quick, do you have any negotiating advice? About to negotiate price for a house

[–] 1 pt (edited )

Hell no. Here they are.

Never by the first you see, see point two.

Practice makes perfect. Go check out something that is out of your budget or that you would never buy anyway, and see what you can get it for when you're not emotionally invested.

Get the other party to say the price first.

When negotiating, be assertive. You say what you want, they say what they want. If they don't tell you to get lost after a few rounds, they want to sell. Keep everyone talking and you'll be surprised at what you can get.

Also if you're going through an agent, remember that they get paid a commission. If they don't get anything, they won't be very helpful. Sometimes, the owner is willing to sell for low, but the agent is holding on for the hope of a higher commission, promise them a little on the side if the price is right, and they might need to "call the owner to see if they're OK with that price".

But I assume you've done your research before pulling the trigger on what is probably the most expensive thing anyone purchases during their life.

I'm just going to tell him that I know where he lives and what his wife sleeps in a blue night gown.

Well that's a good start, it's always good if your wife and his have something in common.
