My father and I share a family plan and he has a military discount which makes the monthly not so bad. He's got the X , I have an Android phone. I recently read somewhere that software version 17 is coming out which isn't compatible with the X. Will he be forced to upgrade or can he just blow this off until he's done enough research to move to a different phone. I did some light research about moving him off Apple to an Android phone but then I was noticing that some of these Android phones won't work unless you update your plan to a 5G plan. I find this bullshit because then we lose our unlimited internet and have to go to some 20 gig per month crap. So I guess my question is if he does want to continue with Apple what phone can he go up to that doesn't require him to be on a 5G plan mandatorily? Or is that requirement just an Android thing?

Problem is that it's apple's policy since 2 decades now; upgrade or die. If you're looking for a brand that gives you the maximum liberty in term of what you install and when, apple is anything but the right choice

Now I wouldn't recommend you a linux phone, because last time I checked they were expensive and sub par compared to android equivalents... Needless to mention that as most things linux, it's for DIY type of people, not really intended for "tech dumbs", without any disrespect I mean you have people that aren't into tech at all, they need to be fully assisted for everything even the most basic stuffs, it's like that

Overall I think it's better to dump apple, because you'll always run into special issues/compatibility issues and you'll always feel prisoner of their echo system in terms of software policies

Well some, not all... It's a trade off I guess

I think it's best course of action is going into the store and being like I want to keep my current plan I need a phone that will fall within that parameter. He's old and kind of retarded so he'll have a hard time trying to figure out Android but it's better than being forced into another fucking Apple phone. His big thing is not losing FaceTime and I'm like Pop there's about 10 different programs you can use that'll do away with FaceTime.
