We watched a couple of gypsy children, holding a sign asking for money so they could afford school books, work both sides of a street lined with cafes and people sitting at tables on the sidewalk. Then we saw them enter a alleyway and get into a Mercedes Benz. This was in some town in Spain.

There's a video out there on the internet that shows an English guy in some European town. He has a DSLR camera with a large lens strung around his neck. He's approached by a group of men (gypsies) who badger him with questions while holding up a map. While the Brit is distracted by the commotion and his sight blocked by the map one of the men manages to remove the lens from the camera and walk off with it. At that time the whole group disburses. The Brit immediately notices the lens is missing and starts accosting anyone near him but they point at someone else and move away.

It's a master class in coordinated misdirection and nimble fingers.

My wife was on a train going to Rome with an Italian friend. He had told her to keep her bags in front of her at all times. The train was crowded and they were standing. The friend caught a gypsy just starting to go through my wife's bags and spoke sharply to him as only Italians can. The gypsy just shrugged and turned away, he didn't even bother to try to distance himself. My wife told me afterwards that she was oblivious to the whole thing until our friend told her.

If they had possessed any work ethic to speak of, they would have cut the strap and taken the camera and lens together. Lazy fuckers.

I know you're making a joke but the lens was easily worth $2,000, several times more than the camera body.

Romany gypsies and Irish travelers are both cancers of society that need to be exterminated. They do nothing but evil their entire lives. Gypsy children are trained to steal as soon as they can walk. Travelers think nothing of conning old women out of their life savings and leaving them penniless. Both tribes (and that is what they are) are pure evil.
