No you can't. That same person making $600,000 a year in California would pay $58,349 in state income tax, bringing their total tax to 41.8%. Keep in mind that's taxable income which is never the same as gross income.
A more typical middle class family with two kids earning around $100k in California would pay about $5,832 in Federal income tax and $2150 in state taxes, for a grand total of 8%.
there's also the 7.5% FICA on the 1st $130K, and the additional .9% if wages exceed $200K. I understand these aren't 'income taxes' per se, but they are deducted from wages and in the eyes of the W2 employee, it's all tax withheld
Very true, but the "theoretical" people with no deductions and no credits are pretty rare. The family in my previous example would pay a total of about 15% out of their paychecks if they're doing their W4 correctly.
you're talking about the $100K couple with kids and federal only, correct?

I really doubt that. Not in california, but I don't know a single person paying that low of a rate, kids or no kids.
You don't have to doubt it. Look it up yourself.
$100,000 income minus $24,800 standard deduction that all married couples get at a minimum = $75,200.
Look up the tax for $75,200 in taxable income for married filing jointly in the 2020 1040 instructions (irs.gov) (it's $8,632).
Subtract $2,800 child tax credit = $5,832.
That's your federal income taxes: 5.8%.
Then lookup the income tax for $65,998 taxable income (married couples get an additional $9,202 deduction) in California's 2020 tax calculator (webapp.ftb.ca.gov) (it's $1,614).
Total income taxes from $100,000 is $1,614 + $5,832 = $7,446. 7.4% of $100,000. Add in FICA taxes and you get $15,096, or 15.1%.
You are only talking about "direct" taxes. don't forget all the hidden tax in the price of everything. 20-25% of the final cost is that hidden tax. Even on food.
