Yeah, this is interesting but it looks like just an add-on peripheral for your pocket computer.
The Baofeng and whatever is the new one (can't remember) are super cheap, and you can literally have multiples laying around always charged - besides, if you have a car charger for your handy-talkie then you have enough power to run the device, even with a partially depleted primary in the car.
@stupidbird @CanIPlay2 Its the Xiaomi. I really need to buy both to play with but I am still not HAM certified. Like I said, a good project for the coming winter. Probably something really good to have with the now in progress WWIII.

[edit] A bunch of people also suggest the Quansheng UV-K6 with a custom firmware. YMMV. I feel like I should just buy 2 of each and mess around with them.
Maybe this should be its own post but for now it works here.
If shit hits the fan, my amateur license is worthless.
The Xiaomi stuff looks nice, but the Baofeng has a keypad. Sure, it's a pain to program, but it's a lot easier than something with no numbers on the front.
Yeah, That's kind of the thought. Have a backup on a backup. N+4-5...X ;)
