Yeah, you need a attachment, its basically a SDR but still.

From the post:

>kv4p HT is a homebrew VHF radio that makes your phone capable of voice and text communication completely off-grid with at least a Technician class amateur radio license. The radio simply plugs into the USB C port on your Android smartphone and transforms it into a fully-fledged handheld radio transceiver. It's completely open source (GPL3): the Android app, ESP32 firmware, PCB designs, and 3D printer files.

I'm not computer smarts. Idk anything about this kinda stuff.

Where would I start? I'd like to be able to comm off grid with my phone. Android, less than a year old, still just a "stock" phone.

What are my options for equipment?

Would I be better off with a Boafang (spelling?)

I know nothing about ham or radios, etc.

@stupidbird might have better answers than me but yeah, that cheep chinese stuff is probably a lot easier to get started with and it is highly hackable as long as you are willing to learn to soldier/etc but I don't know how well they hold up long term.

Yeah, this is interesting but it looks like just an add-on peripheral for your pocket computer.

The Baofeng and whatever is the new one (can't remember) are super cheap, and you can literally have multiples laying around always charged - besides, if you have a car charger for your handy-talkie then you have enough power to run the device, even with a partially depleted primary in the car.

@stupidbird @CanIPlay2 Its the Xiaomi. I really need to buy both to play with but I am still not HAM certified. Like I said, a good project for the coming winter. Probably something really good to have with the now in progress WWIII.

[edit] A bunch of people also suggest the Quansheng UV-K6 with a custom firmware. YMMV. I feel like I should just buy 2 of each and mess around with them.

Maybe this should be its own post but for now it works here.
