There is a huge group of hams dedicated to low power portable ops who reject the "ham shack" mentality of using heavy, high-powered equipment that tethers you to a building and dedicated power supply. How far with how little is the quest of portable ops, nicknamed "QRP". They use 5 watts or less and only the equipment they can carry.

Lots of online videos of portable stations set up in the middle of nowhere, wire thrown up into a tree, making contacts hundreds or thousands of miles away using battery power. It's quite impressive.

Much harder to silence amateur radio than cell signals and internet

Yup. There's no way to "turn off" your own radio.
Getting a ham ticket isn't hard. A lot of dealers won't sell you radios without a ticket, so you might as well get it. The thing is, you are required to transmit your call sign every 10-15 minutes -- until you suddenly decide not to. Either way, they can only punish you afterwards. The can't prevent you from transmitting.

....And no way to prove you didn't transmit your call sign.

  • If people want to just listen to shortwave / HAM chatter, no license is required
