that's all.

wanted to do this for a few years - finally bought a study guide, and then a second one because the first one made no sense, followed through & can now start practicing on the radio (cheap basic baofung) tonight.

feel good

Welcome to the hobby. You will enjoy it immensely. The UV5R is a great little handheld and when you hit a repeater on The Reflector you can talk to a shitload of people on 2m many states away. Enjoy!

I have a UV5R with a Signal Stick antennae. I love this thing but I'm not licensed to transmit.

I have the same setup, am licensed...just get the license. Very worth it.

Good skill to have! Way to go!

x hours later at home....operating the dang radio to get a call out not as easy as i assumed.....my next post may be when i successfully talk w/ someone.....rrrrrgh

Press the button, speak into the mic. How hard can it be? /s I have the ARRL books and studied for technician and general, but have not taken the tests as I only have a receiver. I have a little Sangean HF

Good luck in your transmissions. Have you listened to 'nets in your area? Here in Michigan there is the Michigan Wolverine Single Sideband Net (wssbn.com) that I tune into occasionally.

It's like fishing for geeks. A lot of sitting around. Have you looked into software defined radio at all? It's fun connecting an antenna to your computer and listening to FM and AM radio. Not as easy as it would seem.

Have you looked into software defined radio at all?-------not yet Not as easy as it would seem.------no it isn't! at least not for me, but 1 slogging step at a time i'll get there

Awesome. I've been considering trying for General this next year. I just can't get the band plans to stick in my head.

[–] 1 pt

DO IT! i'd like to get that one next year, too. more options

[–] 1 pt

Just keep taking the online practice tests you'll get ENOUGH of it to stick. I S U C K at test taking and I got my General. If "I" can do it ANYONE can

[–] 1 pt

I just need to buckle down and do it. I think I'll make that my winter project.

[–] 1 pt

Cant go wrong doing it for sure

Ya know a good idea would be to start a roster of call signs here on Poal on a separate thread and get some folks hooked up across the Country in case SHTF.

Never mind I just rethought that idea and all Callsigns are able to be looked up as to who they belong to. It would totally ruin anyone's anonymity. Too bad though

If shtf use your username, I mean what are they going to do when a hot Civil war is upon us?

We should announce a channel though. PoalerGritD2 on 151.625

Yes a frequency to meet on would not be a bad idea at all. Good thought!

I figured weatherman was a good channel , cause when shtf, you are gonna want to know the conditions outside.

I don't think you're a glownigger, but a glownigger read your comment and dilated from excitement.

Why care though? If things ever go hot there's going to be too much radio traffic for them to care about.

If you're in a hot conflict, you're not gonna have time to care about the law.

In a war, who is the most dangerous, the enemy or the traitor within? If they don't know who you are, then you can be either.

ahahahah I would think a Glownigger wouldn't have added the edit

I bought a pair of uv5r radios but haven't done anything with them yet.

[–] 2 pts

charge the battery & start scanning for traffic - hearing others out there could be the inspiration to do more

[–] 0 pt

Well I said nothing but I did program one of them to some local repeaters and to NOAA via chirp. Just haven't done anything beyond that.

[–] 1 pt

well, shit - you're ahead of me. got very frustrated trying to program repeater & pl codes last night

I liked the idea of ham radio until I found out you need some bootlicking license to operate. Fucking bullshit. Like I want to be listed as an owner of one. >:(

I remember getting my call sign. Got another one in MARS. Seriously, infiltrate MARS. You'll learn shit you can't even imagine.

Nice! Now study for General and get HF privileges....
