SHIT I HIT SUBMIT, WAIT WAIT THERE ARE MORE PHOTOS, that's what I get for editing in browser, fuck it we'll do it live OK all good now, nobody saw anything...

Hey @Boone this is what I was working on yesterday and today - a truck mount to keep my handheld GPS and handheld 5W triband ham radio ("HT" is amateur radio shorthand for handhelds). I got some of these (proclipusa.com) as a gift recently for this purpose so I pushed through and got it done. @terannotterran has seen my truck so he can visualize this for when we set up the /s/goatsgulch out in the hinterlands. Didn't buy anything for the project; everything I had on-hand already.

CUTTING AWAY CARPET AND INSTALLING NUTSERTS

Fuck, man, I really wanted to avoid peeling back a rectangle of carpet but the underlayment is so thick with padding and noise dampening shit that fouls up the drill bit that it became necessary. At any rate, the unit securely sits right on the body pans now. I had a set of nutserts (avdelusallc.com) (a.k.a. "rivnuts") that seemed to be appropriate; in fact the same hardware is used to fasten the roof cargo rack to the... roof sheet metal (this is the case, by the way, for most roof racks, which limits their capacity and function vs. being attached to the body pillars or frame).

  1. Showing location of install forward of armrest/center console area (pic8.co) don't dox my finger
  2. Nutsert install tool - pretty much a variant of a pop rivet tool (pic8.co)
  3. Pair of installed nutserts - drill hole, insert, then use rivet tool to collapse back side in place (pic8.co)

BUILDING THE SUPPORT

About a 6/10 effort on woodworking and staining on my part; was cold and didn't have patience. I had plans sketched out and would've included them here but my ideas changed as I went (primarily to convert to rotating mount, which was easier anyway) so I just measured and cut to the evolving project, slapping my favorite Cabot Gold Cherry stain on it... I use that shit on everything!

  1. Starting materials - don't remember where I had that painted steel sheet metal mount from but it worked well for this. (pic8.co)
  2. Cut top plate - used best-grained piece I had because it's front/center (pic8.co)
  3. Tried to cut an arc with this RotoZip tool I have. Shit just burns its way through everything and turns out like shit, should've learned my lesson. Stupid tool, or stupid user? ;) (pic8.co)
  4. Sanded that edge smooth to a nice arc I traced from a bottle (pic8.co)
  5. Both uprights done and began to stain (pic8.co)
  6. Had some wingnuts and bolts to match, perfect for this (pic8.co)
  7. Drilling rotation-mount-hole in metal bracket (pic8.co) don't dox my foot
  8. Clamped for drilling holes for screws to hold bottom and uprights together (pic8.co). Ended up splitting it in one corner because I used screws of too-large diameter :(.
  9. Test-fit together (pic8.co)
  10. How the top plate mounts to metal bracket (pic8.co). Oh yeah I also split it here a tiny bit but that was not my fault, I swear!
  11. Snazzy! (pic8.co)
  12. Decided it's be better to have black hardware, +1 for professionalism (pic8.co)

MOUNTING IN TRUCK

  1. With clips attached, finally shoved into the hole and lined up the hold-down screws and nutserts (pic8.co)
  2. Complete! View from driver's seat (pic8.co)
  3. Found one of those square nails under my passenger seat, from who-knows-where lol (pic8.co), @zombielordzero I did keep it

I finished the photos now, lol

Since I did that trip to Terlingua Ranch up to the mesa I thought it would behoove me to set up something like this.

Very nice! Looks good. I'm starting to use a dedicated GPS a little bit. I like "offline" hardware like that more and more.

That is a very square nail.
