I have built one of these myself and it reports to flight24. Its really interesting to be able to see stuff in your area. A few months ago a lot of people were asking about a helo that was circling the area over and over for a couple of days. I was able to use my system to get the tail number and track down the aircraft. Turns out it was being used to try to track emissions from active and abandoned oil/gas wells. I'm currently running a ADS-B system using a SDR and a raspberry pi.

Building your own is easy enough and flight24 has instructions on that but if you are near a low-coverage airport then they may send you a full kit for free if you just plug it in and connect it to the internet.

I guess the airports around me already have enough coverage.

It is still kind of fun to have your own system. Mine is running "dump1090" as well as the software that sends data to fligh24 so I have a local (near real-time) map of everything around me from my own receiver. All it takes is a small computer/raspberry pi and a SDR with a proper antenna and you can get the data and process it.

I could have a much better setup with a good outdoor antenna but even with one just sitting in a upstairs window I get around 600 miles of coverage. Sometimes I look around just to see what is near me flying. I'm thinking about building something to stream the same data to a local db or something so I can have historical data on all of the craft around me.

There is a flight school near by so we get a lot of fly-over traffic. It would not really have much use other than because I can.. but. Why not?
