I have built one of these myself and it reports to flight24. Its really interesting to be able to see stuff in your area.
A few months ago a lot of people were asking about a helo that was circling the area over and over for a couple of days.
I was able to use my system to get the tail number and track down the aircraft. Turns out it was being used to try to track emissions from active and abandoned oil/gas wells. I'm currently running a ADS-B system using a SDR and a raspberry pi.
Building your own is easy enough and flight24 has instructions on that but if you are near a low-coverage airport then they may send you a full kit for free if you just plug it in and connect it to the internet.

>Are you interested in helping us increase ADS-B and MLAT coverage in your area? Each week Flightradar24 sends out 30-50 complete ADS-B receiver sets (including receiver, antenna, and cables – no external computer needed) free of charge to suitable hosts around the world. If you’re located near one of the airports listed below you can help increase our ADS-B and MLAT coverage.
