I've honestly never had problems with someone referring to their girlfriend/boyfriend as such, unless you've started a family with that person or beyond your mid-twenties. Most other terms for boyfriend (freethesaurus.com) or girlfriend (freethesaurus.com) are either interchangeable in context or fell out of use after the 1950's. I suspect with the rise of feminism, the psychotics felt that terms for males were too strong and terms for females too weak.
I just hope folks don't use baby momma/daddy like the welfare dependent population are inclined to do.
