A holocaust is a great sacrifice or burnt-offering, in which the whole victim was consumed on the altar. The term is figuratively applied to any great and destructive conflagration. In the year 64, during the reign of Nero, a great part of Rome was burnt; and the historian Tacitus estimates the loss of property at no less than nine-tenths of the whole city. The conflagration lasted six days and nights, and was finally checked only by the open spaces in the outskirts being left standing. On this occasion, the emperor contributed largely to the relief of the sufferers, and erected buildings for the public use on a more spacious and regular plan. In the year 1814, a great part of Moscow was destroyed by fire; the flames raged during three successive days, and 14,000 houses were reduced to ashes. The holocaust at Moscow has been computed to have cost the inhabitants in property not less than fifteen millions sterling. In more recent times, a great part of Hamburg was laid in ruins; and, in 1831, the splendid Exchange at Liverpool was partially consumed. Holocausts have, of course, been recorded in other countries, besides those of Europe. The great temple of Diana, at Ephesus, was burnt by Eratostratus, on the same night that Alexander the Great was born; and, in 1632, the still greater temple of Serapis, at Alexandria, shared a similar fate. Holocausts are spoken of in Scripture, as offerings made to false gods, and figurativeiy applied to great slaughters in battle. The valley of Tophet, near Jerusalem, became the scene of such abominations, and human victims were there offered in sacrifice to Moloch. The practice was continued to a late period of Jewish history, and Jeremian reproaches the inhabitants of Judea, for causing their sons and daughters to pass through the fire to Baal. Holocausts were also common among the Greeks and Romans, in times of public calamity; and Julian the Apostate attempted to re-establish the custom, when he endeavoured to restore paganism in the Roman empire.
