Sam Altman says Meta is offering $100M signing bonuses to OpenAI staff.

Not $100M annual compensation, just the signing bonus!

He clowned Meta: “that’s not how you build a great culture.” Also said none of OpenAI’s best people are leaving.

This AI talent war is crazy.

Is it too late to be an OpenAI engineer? I'd take $10 million

I dabbled with lisp in the early '80s and I'd gladly settle for a $1M sign on bonus.

Back in my day a $20K sign on bonus was like hitting the lottery!

You guys got sign on bonuses?

Only if a competing company seriously wanted to snare you, from what I saw at my plant at least. I was offered $20K sign on, 2 weeks paid vacation (for 2) anywhere in the USA, 25% raise, bridging my years of service (to retain 5 weeks vacation accrual per year) ... but I didn't take it. I had fears that the new engineering group would fail, and they did about 3 years later. It was a tough decision but I think I made the right choice.
