As a programmer, this can literally happen in a billion ways.
You get hired into one project you are incompetent so you get moved to another one. Or you are too competent, and an ambitious manager notices and requests your transfer to their department. You don’t refuse obviously because $$$.
Or your project is sunset, your team gets distributed to various projects. Your project is too successful and you have to move to a splinter project as it grows.
I have personally have been moved between like 3 or 4 projects which are as far removed from where I originally started as the new mermaids eyes are from each other.
Did you ever once tell the company 'Look man, i'm not feeling it - i dont wanna be here, this project is absolute bunk' ??
Yes of course.

“At least we aren’t coding missiles that blow people up/making sex robots/ stealing peoples data”
“What else would you like to be working on? Uh huh. Well we will see what we can do I’ll let you know.”
