the issue I have is that there is no guarantee at al to receive a "correct" answer

if "testing" a "normal" application is "difficult", how do you qualify an AI as "accurate" ?

when is an answer "right" ? are we able to know if an answer is right ?

While I agree with your premise, I feel as though code should be easier than most things for AI. Most code issues are result syntax errors, misuse of code, small snippits are fine and easy enough to test, a lot of times its like using google to search for trouble shooting issues back in the day, you need to know what to ask to get the right answer, ie know how to google. Now, knowing how to pose the question to the AI will be the challenge, ie: if you have no fucking idea how to code, then yeah dangerous and hard to verify. Hit a mental block and can't figure out how to get past a spot? easy to verify.

Hell, I've used it (Bing version) to help some powershell, really just pointing me in the right direction, nicer than bugging a co-worker when I get stuck, and I don't get wrapped into a stupid conversation wasting time asking a simple question either.

it all sound like as going to a drug dealer (not a pharmacy)

the first deals are possibly free and wonderful

then hell happens

Interesting take. Yeah I'm a bit leery as to where it goes, guess time will tell. When they make it begin to recognize uses and store the type of questions they ask, ie: Welcome back tempus_vulgate... Then start to tailor responses accordingly, yeah not looking forward to (((them))) trying to sway results to convince me to be a good goy and settle down.

Create a Regular Expression

You still need to understand what regular expressions are and how they work. Otherwise, the expression won't do what is intended. In fact, by not understanding them, you won't even know when to use them.

Same problem: you still need to understand how they work.

Ok. This is a suitable task.

Troubleshoot a Buggy Code Snippet

A crutch at best.

These tools won’t take over your job during a vacation, but they can help you get things done quicker.

Basically, AI is a crutch. It will enable affirmative action people to go beyond their natural skill level. It will thus create suits of work alike output. It will never create clever or good code because it can't understand what it's actually doing.

My current tools do a good job of saving me time with features like intellisense, templates, on the fly syntax checks and warnings about bad practices.

Code snippets are found on various web pages and I have to say, most of what I find are not suitable for use except a small subset, which I use.

Relying on ChatGPT will become the norm and the crappy code will persist because no one will take the time to do it right when ChatGPT will kind of get it close enough.

It's like finding code snippets through a search engine: many treat the snippets as a learning tool, but some cut and paste them, placing dangerous explosives into the code.

Oh yes. As a code reviewer, I look for out of place, non sensible code and copy/paste patterns. It's bad enough now. Then I ask, why is this block of code here? <crickets>. The problem is when I get busy, time bombs make it in the code base.
