I wanted a clip for our cat's wet food so it would stay fresh longer after opening since he doesn't eat a whole pack every time we feed him. I went to order something but then realized "I have a 3d printer" so.. here we are. It works well.

I think I am going to change the time for my time-lapse though. It goes by a little too fast.

Bit rot. That would suck.

I figured with a copy on the hard drives (both laptop and desktop) and 2 thumb drives (one in my safe deposit box at my bank) I'd be in pretty good shape.

The thumb drives were new, very little usage erasing/rewriting. I figured they would hold the data best.

Definitely time for a new desktop. Does anyone burn DVDs anymore?

I still have a DVD/BluRay burner. I use it as a extra backup.

You can get some cd's that will last for maybe a hundred years or more but I think you need a special drive that probably costs as much as a car to burn them.

My viewpoint on it is anything you feel is important or irreplaceable that you should have multiple backups and ideally they should be geographically separated.

If you live in Colorado, you should have a backup in NY State or Canada as well as in maybe Arizona.

I do tend to take things to a bit of a extreme though.

Lol! I think a backup or two at the bank will be good enough for what I need. The most valuable data I have are scanned hi-res images from all of the family negatives and prints going back to when early cameras were available and my family had one. I have a few tin types too but no idea who is in those pictures.

Fascinating stuff. I've seen some of these b/w pictures all of my life, but when you clean and scan the negatives, Photoshop them to improve detail, contrast, lighting ... what a difference! So many details the old printed photos did not contain. I really got a kick out of that effort. My scanner is a Canon 9000F with 9600x9600 dpi. I bought it especially for this task.

Yeah, to me data like that is not replicable so I would want it anywhere I could put it with documentation on how to get to it if I am not around anymore.

Some things can be lost to time just because you forgot where you put it. Who knows when a great, great, great grandchild might want to see what you looked like or where you lived and know a bit more about you?

Assuming you have kids, I don't but want them.
