I think it has something to do with people using his likeness to promote things vs his ideas.

It's the same reason Madonna wears S&M outfits, and Michael Jackson wore one glove, and Prince changed his name to a symbol you couldn't pronounce -- to get noticed. That's all it's about, nothing more. Don't look for deep meaning in the doings of a man with an 85 IQ.

My guess is so he can technically say it wasn’t him. OR as Gavin put it it’s political art and he’s creating a persona he can step out of in some way shape or form later in need be or want.
Because he is mentally ill. People who buy his clothing are also suspect.
