The clock gazed despairingly at the box on the floor. He remembered when Estel first picked him off the shelf, brought him home, and hung him on the wall. Ah, he remembered Estel's daughter Rosie learning to read the time off of him. He loved to serve them, and he was proud, but he was getting old. Alas, he knew what was in the box; a brand-new digital clock. While there's nothing intrinsically or objectively better about his replacement, some could even argue the opposite, he was still struck despondent knowing that he will soon be gone; irrelevant, old, archaic. Estel and Rosie will forget him, but not he them. The repercussions won't be noticed until clocks of his kind are all but forgotten and replaced. Many of his analog brothers won't see it coming until there's nothing that can be done. But, he will know. Perhaps, if they did notice, their fate could change. How did it come to this?

Nice I enjoyed this one, and I agree that learning to read analog clocks is an important skill its why I am teaching my kids to do it before digital.

But did you see the symbolism?

I think I did, but I’m having trouble putting it into words, it’s something about the importance of not throwing out old traditions just because a new one can replace it.

More or less, I was thinking of populations being replaced by other populations
