Why not both? But then, Malaria-chan has been responsible for making a huge percentage of peaceful engineers, and lawyers good.

The Alligator Snapping Turtle is not the handsomest critter in the wild kingdom it is however one of the great survivors .. it has in common with the Loggerhead Sea Turtle an Anapsid skull (i.ibb.co) meaning there are no temporal fenestra (i.ibb.co), identifying both species as having survived the Permian Catastrophe (nationalgeographic.com) that wiped out 95% of all life on Earth 252 million yrs ago.

The snapper's ability to remain underground (i.ibb.co) for extended periods and the sea turtle's way of burying its eggs in the sand, allowed their species to survive the Solar Flare episodes and the era of boiling that came in their wake, which we say caused the Permian and Cretaceous (sciencedirect.com) mass extinctions.

Creatures that survived the Permian extinction include certain types of marine shellfish, sharks, byozoans which are a group of small animals resembling corals, crinoids relatives of starfishes, ammonoids including the chambered nautilus, the coelacanth and horseshoe crabs. Thus the Solar Flares stripped away most of Earth's atmosphere, however the actual period of lessened atmospheric pressure that caused the lakes and rivers and the top layers of sea water to boil off was fairly short, water pressure in the deep seas and in the deepest freshwater lakes and rivers prevented their boiling, while the atmosphere had regained enough pressure to halt the process before the wave of boiling gained the depths.
