Self driving cars are a solution looking for a problem. When they eventually come you won't own your car anymore, they'll make them insanely expensive and dependent on proprietary software hosted by the manufacturer, with each manufacturer having their own software. You won't have a car, when you need to go somewhere you will order a car and it will come to you. You'll pay by the mile, with surcharges for busy times of day. Carpooling will be mandatory due to an artificial lack of supply. Need a car in an emergency, that'll be pretty expensive. "Cars as a service" is what it will be. I predict a "cash for clunkers" type deal where you'll get a year of free service and a tax break for getting rid of your "dumb" car, along with massive gas tax increases. Owning a car will become prohibitively expensive. New homes won't have garages. We will all pay much more for transportation and it will be very inconvenient, but the manufacturers will be making billions.

On the upside bicycle sales will skyrocket and the obesity problem will be helped.

The incentive game is always a favorite.
