So I'd have to use these expensive cables just to connect my PC to the router, or charge my phone? Is it just to allow a single cable to the display? Might as well just make a vendor-specific cable and have a breakout box at the other end with normal connectors, which is what you'll end up using anyway.

I think the cable is meant to replace power/usb/video/network/audio between a computer and (daisy-chained?) displays/"smart"TV.

I see that there's a C version that uses a USB-C connector, so you'd probably get better backwards compatibility. I can see the value in getting outside of HDMI's licensing restrictions.
