Good. Fuck you, if a drive works, I can use it, eat a dick. Like Chevy or Ford saying "Here is a list of approved tires. If the vehicle does not have these, it will not start"

Its a slow steal at every corner.

I don't get their need to do that. All they needed to do was go "We guarantee performance with THESE drives, anything else is YMMV and if it causes issues we can't support it."

I think it had a lot to do with them selling you drives at an inflated price.

Someone commented that the anyway:

Good luck when it doesn't work though. I decided to take the hit and pay their exorbitant HDD prices on the basis that they came with a warranty etc and one of the drives failed within 3 months.

It was genuinely like pulling teeth. They demanded I ship the drive at my own expense from the UK to Germany and they didn't send a replacement for 3 weeks after it arrived at their warehouse. I had to buy another drive to repair my RAID cluster while waiting. Absolutely outrageous customer support.

So they were requiring use of their drives which you couldn't replace on a moment's notice.

You could use your own drives, but they artificially degraded performance.

The older units would accept anything the internal Linux kernel could handle, and was simply limited by the hardware/kernel combination when it was shipped.

Exactly. But in reality they can't warranty data on a drive. Some have that bullshit marketing nonsense, and if you send them your drives they will try to recover. Meaning profile you, scan your shit, if you are on some Fed "catch at all cost" list then they plant files and send back. Or at least just steal all your shit for their records. Never send data anywhere.

Side note, had a Series 7 type office with a failed mirror (told them to relocate the data into a hipaa approved cloud 2 years ago, never did) I spent 36 hours straight, sleeping there getting it recovered on another linux box. 14hrs in I could see data after repair. then the time to copy to another drive, about 4TB of data. The drives had the warranty and they asked if we should send out. I said, no, unless you can find a form to release all your FINCEN flagged data to a 3rd party, but I would not send it to anyone. If it was me, I'd put me in a room with the machine, no internet, and the new drive, and then not let me leave with any media. But you trust me since I been doing this for you for 10 years.....but thats how I would handle untrusted operators.

Got it all back on the NAS, then told them again, move it the fuck. $150 an hour for the time there was very fair. They were down (that nas only) for 3 total business days, which ironically was the return time for a data recovery company, in emergency request. But they would charge 250 an hour. 150 for standard speed, which was return in 5 days. I think I provided a fair service.

Now their broker-dealer says, "no cloud services comply with FINCEN" to which I said, well bullshit, hipaa does, ask o365 to place you in a hipaa/hightech bba tenant. then let them audit it. FINCEN took the hipaa rules since they were fleshed out and then just modified some wording. Encrypted at rest, in transit, located in US datacenters, et al, acces policies, admin policies, retention, breach, employee termination policies all apply and just need to be written, and review/audit (internal by the licensee 'broker') yearly. ...sounds exactly like hipaa.

I fucking hate doing this work anymore. But I like these folks and it will be a nice Christmas Bonus for this simple project. Go deploy a bunch of rizen 7 micro box workstations, 32gb, then build them all to not use the NAS (eliminate all the mappings) and force them onto the azure cloud, shitdrive, et al. They don't need rezen7 for this, but for the $300-$400 a box, its cost effective and gives more longevity.

I personally would deploy linux (it has zero requirements because they don't know how to to build an app to see if it is 'secure') then just load the RDP client for the Microshit Azure services. Oh excuse me ENTRA ID, fuck off, stop changing names or shit people know and discuss.
