That could have been a cool feature if they didn't fuck things up and force you to use one of their hubs now. You used to be able to control them locally with homeassistant but not anymore unless you have a hub that connects to "the mothership".

If anyone has suggestions for some good "automation" lamps I am all ears. Also, if anyone wants some of these Philips Hue's that I no longer have use for, DM me.

From the post:

>Philips Hue has announced that its smart light bulbs — both new and existing models — are being upgraded to feature built-in motion sensing. The new feature, called Hue MotionAware, uses radio-frequency (RF) sensing to detect changes in the Zigbee signal between bulbs, allowing them to respond to movement without the need for separate motion sensors.

There is that. Honestly changing the color is a fools errand. 2700k is the way to go, and just dim based on time or ambient light from another source. Sunset +30,60,80,120, etc. I stair step down the living room from Sunset +60, so an hour before it sets the mood, then stair steps every 30 min across 4 hours. From 90 % down to 10% then off. This sets the brain up for sleep, just like sunset but across a longer period.

3000k and higher is for fucking Walmart parking lots.

Seems like we had the yellow phone screen conversation. Same principle.

Also use motions in the bath and hall. If after sunset and before sunrise+30, motion sense, dim lights to 5%; if no motion for 5, off.

Then you can see, won’t step on your sisters dildo, going down the hall or to the pisser. All hands free.

I do the same for guest room, on lotion set variable guest1 occupancy true, then do the bed side lights the same. Poll ever 2 hrs if not motion, turn off, so if I go in there.

If back door lock 3 wrong codes, after sunset, flash floods and porch lights.

If garage door opens, poll living and kitchen, not on then set to 50%.

Use the multi sensors in bath. If humidity > 60% turn on exhaust for 20, poll in 20 repeat as needed. If outdoor temp <45, turn on bath heat fan. To warm the baths if the room is occupied.

I buy old school manual electric blankets without the soft switches, just an old school clock switch and turn dial. Think 1970’s. That’s on an appliance plug/switch. If temp in house is <65, turn on 9pm, turn off 9am. Applies roof occupied also.

I haven’t deployed the millimeter wave sensors but intend to for all beds, that can see if you are there (senses breathing)

None of my shit is cloud based, all local on local server. Home bridge on Linux, connects to the automation server.

APIsfor the hot water heater and hvac can monitor and control the hvac.

Zigbee hose timers turn on and off the water thought for wildlife.

Have some devices targeted for the well storage tank, to show me level.

What else do I do cool? Christmas, heat stair step the tree, mantel, what ever from 100% to off 4pm To midnight. Ceiling fans, if not occupied, and no motion for 20min, turn off fan. Cycle fans 5 min every hour in empty rooms. To just stir up air. (But also have hvac move air for 5 min every hour whether it’s on cooling or heating) Keeps air from getting stale.

After sunset, driveway/gate sensor alerts, turn on floods 100%, stair step to 50 after 5min, 25% after 10 min, then off after 20.

Outdoor Cameras trigger human or car, do same. Wildlife contrived just records (ai local to the camera, saved on camera sd and nvr)

If after 8am and bath light goes from on to off at switch (cans) kill closet lights, bath heat, bath vent (humidity process still applies), mirrors, sconces, off.

So I basically don’t use Alexa or any voice and minimal mobile device. The house is truly automated, walk around and shit happens when it needs to and doesn’t blind you at night, shit can’t be forgotten left on.

The follow me motion is also something I have to work on a script. Lights come on 5% after dark where ever you go, and then turn off in sequence. Sit on the couch watching tv, get up to go in kitchen, lights come on for you. Need more, just use switch.

Also I personally use incandescent bulbs, as you can dim them down to 1%, most led’s you can’t dim below 10-15% or the flicker. Sat your lower thresholds on led lights.

Think outside the box, I started with homesteader in like 1998 or 99, thought through and decided taking a switch and putting it on a computer is dumb. Then phones that could, still dumb. Takes too long, switch in wall is faster. Used Alexa for all short while, then unhooked all that shit. Researched the rPi voice assistant, but never needed it. Automation is not voice telling something to happen. Automation is having it respond to actions passively through a thought out plan. Besides needing more light in the kitchen, or floods when go outside, I never touch a switch mostly. If I forget to do off intent am at the bath for it to shutdown, safety net: no motion after 20, shut off, set occupancy of room to vacant.

Should have put this in home automation sub.
