I appreciate how well this works. Those phones are less than worthless to the thieves. Not only can they not sell them, the phones are being tracked and actively drawing attention to whoever is holding them. They ended up being picked up and carried back to the store by a cop.

What I don’t like about this is Apple can remotely disable anyone’s iPhone anytime they want. You don’t own something that is not fully under your control.

That's not totally accurate. Most of stolen crApple goods iCloud locked will end up in ShenZhen where they will be gutted for their parts. Despite crApple claiming only they can calibrate parts to be accepted by the iOS, Chinese repair shops have advanced tools to calibrate and validate those parts.
