This is why Tesla's all wheel drive system is literally one engine in the front axle and a second engine in the rear axle.

GM did similar with their Tahoe Hybrid, it had two smaller electric assist motors in back basically mounted over each wheel to power them. So that vehicle was pretty quick & nimble in in EV mode before the gas engine took over.

What I think is a moderate small battery, an engine to constantly charge it and only electricity to run the wheels. No gas assist no charging just gas powered generator powering electric motors. No huge battery weight no heavy gas engine and those electric motors on the wheels I saw years ago but did not know they actually used them in a production vehicle.
