I've been thinking about stuff like this and realized with the right setup a good hybird can beat them all. You don't need huge storage, you don't need a huge engine the smaller the better, small tank since your millege is hugely efficient also. I'm not a fan of the ones out there but if a company can come up with a more efficient tiny engine since it's only powering an electric motor and HP isn't really a thing and variable rpm and high mpg are it could be much less weighty since your not hooked to a drive train that would be pushing high torque to the motor directly. Hell make the motor out of ceremic or machine aluminum but highly reduced in size to save a ton of wieght. Hell use a wankle motor or something.

This is why Tesla's all wheel drive system is literally one engine in the front axle and a second engine in the rear axle.

GM did similar with their Tahoe Hybrid, it had two smaller electric assist motors in back basically mounted over each wheel to power them. So that vehicle was pretty quick & nimble in in EV mode before the gas engine took over.

What I think is a moderate small battery, an engine to constantly charge it and only electricity to run the wheels. No gas assist no charging just gas powered generator powering electric motors. No huge battery weight no heavy gas engine and those electric motors on the wheels I saw years ago but did not know they actually used them in a production vehicle.
