I have not used pidgin in ages but used to use it all of the time. It was handy as a multi-messenger client for when everyone had to have a different messenger for some reason.

A plugin in the repository was malware.

Headline from original article is sensationalized. The repo is fine, there was just a bad plugin. Sounded like the whole repo server had malware, so that nothing could be trusted.
